When you go to any repair shop, you’ll likely see acronyms related to vehicle parts, repair procedures and the shop’s credentials. As a consumer, you don’t need to worry about most of these abbreviations, but there’s one you should always look for: ASE. ASE stands for Automotive Service Excellence. It’s important to use an auto repair shop that has ASE certified technicians because you can trust they’re up-to-date on the latest vehicle technologies.

What Does ASE Certification Mean?

The fact a technician has spent the time and expense to further his education and become ASE certified indicates he’s serious about his trade. Not all repair shops require their technicians to become certified. Consequently, those who do are going above and beyond what’s required of them for one reason: they want to become vehicle maintenance and repair experts. Simply put, ASE certification means you can be certain you’re placing your vehicle in the hands of people who are experienced and knowledgeable to take optimal care of it.

Why Insist On Working Only With An ASE Certified Technician

One of the major benefits of using a certified mechanic is you know for certain he has, at minimum, two years of experience under his belt. While it’s true everyone must start somewhere, you probably don’t want a fresh out of school mechanic using your car as a learning experience. It’s essential to insist only a skilled ASE technician work on vehicle, especially if you drive an import.

How Does An Auto Repair Technician Become Certified?

The ASE certification is to automotive professionals what the CPA certification is to accountants. The process to get those types of specialized certifications is similar from profession to profession. Auto repair technicians earn the distinction of being ASE-certified by studying, passing an ASE certification test with questions about all vehicle systems and components and possessing two years of on-the job training or a year of training and a degree in auto repair.

There’s a reason not all technicians are ASE-certified. The exam, which covers engine repair, automatic transmission, transaxles, manual drive trains, axles, brakes and suspension, electrical systems and heating and air conditioning systems, is challenging. One third of test takers fail the test the first time they take it. Once a technician does pass the test and achieves ASE-certification, he must retest every five years to ensure he stayed abreast of changing technology.
